These are some of our upcoming events.  Soon, you'll be able to access forms in pdf format on our site (http://charlieschessclub.com/events.html) by clicking on link in the events column.  Still working out some of the bugs, but we intend to have them fixed in the next week.  

New Website

After some blood, sweat, and tears, Charlie’s Chess Club is proud to announce we have gone legit. We have officially launched our own website.  Right now the website is in its infancy, currently it has some content, but we plan on adding much more.  At the moment our plan is to add something new at least a couple of times a month.  Especially, in the next couple of months, so please visit us often.  Some of things you can expect to see on our site in the future are: a periodical, an online form for tournament entry, links to useful sites,  a Q&A section from questions I have received from students, and much more.  Right now, the website has only been tested using chrome and explorer, as we add new content we are only going to ensure it renders properly using chrome.  I wrote the site primarily in HTML5 so firefox and other web browsers may not be able to properly display all of the dynamic content.   The url for the site is:

So what happens to the blog?  We’ll still use the blog for posting tournament announcements and results, also for other updates. 

For the first part of the year, the focus has been trying to launch this site.  Now that’s its up and running, we are going to refocus our energy on running events.  So we hope to see you soon!

Charlie's Spring Open Results

Congratulations to Andrew Flores (shared 1^st), Douglas Thigpen (shared 1st), and Julian Trujillo for each winning their respective sections, I would also like to congratulate Munir Hammad and Mark Smith for winning the class prizes in each of their sections.  I think we should all give a standing ovation to Joel Pagan, who managed an Impressive 1.5/4.0 in his first tournament in a tough reserve section. A heck of start to what looks like a promising new tournament player.   

I want to thank everyone who participated, the event ran smoothly without any major hiccups.  I also want to send out my deepest gratitude to Robert Hampton, who only competed as a house player this weekend even though he was registered to play, because we had someone who showed up Saturday morning wanting to play even though we were not accepting late entries.  So he very unselfishly gave up his seat at the table so that we would have an even number.  Seriously, what a cool dude! 

I was very impressed with all of the games I had the fortune of observing.  Even though there were a number of draws during the tournament, most were played to a dead drawn position.  It’s always refreshing to see such fighting chess.  The tournament had a fitting end, while the last game to finish was a tense struggle between Peter Lattimore and Greg Stricklin. It was so entertaining that a large portion of players stayed to watch it hours after their games had concluded.  It was a real treat. Thank you all again.

Charlie's Winter Championship - Tournament Results

Congratulations to Andrew Flores, David Langlois (shared 1^st), Arthur Glassman (shared 1^st), and Robert Hampton for winning each of their respective sections.  I would also like to thank everyone who participated, especially those who haven’t played that much serious chess in the recent years and decided to give it a try this past weekend; namely Stephen Sandager, Dennis Dyer, and Ron London.  It was tremendous to see each of you there.  Also, I’m very appreciative for Ben Coraretti and David Langlois for making the trip from out of town, which I’m sure was difficult for a three day event.  A special thanks to Sam Dooley for filling in the last minute when a player from the top section dropped out a day before the tournament.  Talk about saving me from even more grey hair. One last resounding thank you to New Mexico’s two new stalwarts Peter Lattimore, Gregory Stricklin who seem to manage to participate in everything.  I find your passion for chess inspiring.  I hope all of you have a safe and happy holidays!!!
